my very favorite nervous system calming technique

For a while now, I’ve been wanting to share with all of you some of the exercises and techniques I use frequently in my own life. The one I’m sharing today is probably the technique I use the very most to calm down quickly, because it’s so easy to use, whether you’re sitting, standing, or even walking.

I use it a ton (a ton, seriously!) when I’m walking the streets of Manhattan and: someone bumps into me, a loud noise comes out of nowhere and ratchets up my heartbeat, I have a thought that gets me all nervous/angry, I feel hyperemotional and disconnected from the present moment, and any other stimulating thing you could possibly think of.

Try it (especially the part where you put somebody else’s tootsies on top of your own; that’s my fave), and let me know how it goes.
